Student Wellbeing
Whilst every measure possible is taken to ensure good health care for students in college, there will always be times when specialist health care is needed. Thus the presence of a school nurse on site with a sick room for those circumstances where a student needs medication or restoration!
There are several members of staff who are trained first aiders to deal with accidents on the spot and all staff are made aware of particular medical problems of students in their classes via a medical alert list.
Occasionally, where circumstances demand it, students are sent home ill but not without prior contact with parents. If we have particular concerns about the health of a student, following an accident perhaps, an ambulance will be sent for to dispense specialist care.
Health awareness features in the pastoral curriculum as well, where subjects like eating disorders, drugs and alcohol abuse, sexual development and sexual problems are dealt with, variously by the nurse talking to groups, through the peer mentors or more generally through visiting theatre groups who tackle health topics in a lively and demanding way.
Obviously good health can be maintained directly though the students' participation in exercise; PE and games lessons are vital to this process. All students are encouraged to further their fitness, skills and agilities in after school sports groups.

Student Mental Health
Something that helps to improve my mental health is meditation, as it helps me relax and relieves stress. I personally like to meditate in the morning when it's quiet and so that I have a positive start to the day. As well as helping to eliviate stress, meditation often helps to enhance self awareness and improve attention span. Meditation can be done anywhere and can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as half an hour. Some apps which have helped me meditate are 'Headspace', 'Calm' and 'Let's Meditate'. Happy meditating,
Megan😊❤️

School Nurse
Okehampton College are pleased to be working with Vicky Johns, our school Nurse.
Here are some key bits of information that we hope you will find useful, should you need support with any health concerns.
Vicky will be at the College twice a month, on Tuesdays and appointments can be made with her.
Vicky will be available some lunchtimes in a safe, quiet space that we will share with students via the student bulletin and notices around the college.
Appointments can also be co-ordinated via the attendance officer.
Parents, teachers, and other staff can make referrals to the school nurse using this form.
There is also a community Clinic in Okehampton Hospital every Monday morning, as well as a Holsworthy school centre on a Wednesday morning.
The school nursing Hub contact details are 0333 234 1904. Open 9-5pm
We hope that you might also pop along to see Vicky at parents evenings, where she will be hosting pop up stations to support with any themes that are current with young people and matters related to their health.
We recognise that health can have an impact on a student’s attendance and so we might also share details of the school nurse with you if your child’s attendance drops below 96% so that we can offer support if appropriate.
We hope you find the school nurse service useful, should you need or wish to use it
