Students are assessed across three separate strands in order to support their learning across three different areas of the curriculum:
Strand |
What will be assessed |
How is this marked |
Ability |
This is assessment of skills, tactics and strategies including their basic level of fitness. |
Teachers will be assessing students based on whether their physical performance is secure for their age. This is dependent on the activity but could be passing, dribbling, shooting, game play, defending strategies for example |
Brain |
This is the assessment of knowledge, including how to maintain a healthy/active lifestyle |
Teachers will be assessing students through question and answer to decide if students’ knowledge is secure for their age. The content of this will depend on the activity but it may involve explaining the effects of changes to their body during exercise, explanation of key teaching points of a skill, understanding and applying the rules of a game for example |
Community |
This is the assessment of other aspects of PE for example team work, analysis and evaluation of performance, fairness and respect. |
Teachers will be looking to assess students on their ability to coach or assist others and give advice and feedback accurately. It includes how students are developing their resilience and confidence. This may also involve how well students participate within a team and what values they have shown with regard to good sportsmanship in competitive situations for example. |

Extra-Curricular Sport
Sport plays a very important part in life at Okehampton College. We have many successful teams and individuals competing at local, county and national competitions. Sports Leaders from all year groups help to run sports festivals and competitions for our local primary school children.
Clubs are held throughout the year, and on every day of the week at either lunch time or after school. Please be aware that college clubs do not charge money. Late buses run on a Tuesday and Thursday evening leaving from the college drive at 5pm. Extra-curricular provision within the department is revised each half term. This is shared with students via the tutor system. Students can expect a range of activities but we do focus on the competitive seasons so expect to see activities such as netball, hockey, football, rugby, and table tennis within the first two terms (September-April); and summer activities such as tennis, rounders, athletics and cricket during the summer term (April-July).
Students may be selected to represent school teams on fixtures if they have been attending a club, this will be communicated home via the school gateway system.
Helpful information for students and parents:
Please be aware that where students are well enough to attend college, we feel they are able to participate within PE lessons. For this reason, please ensure that students always bring their college PE kit to all PE lessons. if students are unable to take part physically in a lesson, please send them to college with a note to ensure staff understand what the students’ needs are for the lesson, as they may be able to take on a less physical role within a lesson (for example a coach, referee or umpire).

- Please be advised that jewellery is not permitted for PE. For this reason please ensure that all jewellery is removable for PE lessons in order to ensure we can keep students safe.
