Edexcel GCSE Drama
Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice (Written Examination)
An extended extract is given below for the set text in Section A. The extract featured in the exam will be taken from this extended extract of the text.
• The format of the exam paper and the length of the extracts given in the exam will remain consistent in length with previous exam series.
• Students may focus their revision on these specific extracts, but it is still important to understand these in the context of the whole text to both answer questions in the assessment and support their progression.
Section A: Bringing Texts to Life
Text: An Inspector Calls, J B Priestley:
The advance information provides students with an extended extract. The extract students have to refer to in the examination paper will be taken from this extended extract.

Summary of changes for Summer 2022 assessments (pearson.com)

Follow the links for resources to support your revision on the following areas:
Task 1:
Performance skills (Ai, Aii, Bii + Live Theatre)
Write ‘what, how, why’ sentences for at least 5 vocal skills and 5 performance skills.
Think about which character’s would use these skills and when during the Act 2 extract from An Inspector Calls.
Revise through the performance skills terminology table
Task 2:
An Inspector Calls – 1945 Context – Priestley’s intentions (Bi + C)
Revise Priestley’s intentions for writing ‘An Inspector Calls’ in 1945
Write down at least 3 different context points which either link to your design ideas or key moments/events within the Act 2 extract.

Task 3:
An Inspector Calls – Character development in the complete play (Bii)
Revise the character arcs and developing emotional states for each character at the beginning, middle and end of the play.
You must be able to link to key events and the Act’s they take place in. E.g., Gerald = happy (Act 1 celebrating their engagement) – remorseful (Act 2 admitting his dalliance with Eva) – accusing (Act 3 Questioning the Inspector’s identity)
Consider what vocal, physical and stage positional skills you would use to show these developments.
Task 4:
An Inspector Calls – Design Elements (Bi & C)
Revise the design elements that could be used in Act 2 of An Inspector Calls.
You must be able to list 3 practical examples from at least 4 design areas (sound, lighting, costume, set, props & stage furniture, staging). Consider why these design choices are particularly relevant to the Act 2 extract.
Task 5:
Live Theatre – 500 word notes
Update your 500 word live theatre notes making sure you have 3-4 key terms/skills for each design area and performance skill (vocal and physical).
Refer back to the Class Live Theatre PowerPoint to check your depth and terminology.
Task 6:
Live Theatre – Key moments:
Summarise the storyline and events in the 3 key moments from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in one to two sentences each.
