Post 16 French (AQA)

Year 12 MFL support booklet
​In Yr12, students will study one film, which is currently ‘La Haine’, for which they must write a 300-word essay in the exam. Students also study the topics below, which provide the basis of the reading, listening, and speaking parts of the exam.

1. The changing nature of family: new couples and partnerships; single parents, homosexual parents, and different family structures, and grandparents.
2. Cyber society: technology in daily life; dangers of digital technology, and different technology users and future developments.
3. Volunteering: defining volunteers and their work; the benefits of voluntary work and who is helped, and the value of voluntary work in society.
4. Artistic Culture: the role of heritage; tourism, and the impact of heritage on culture.
5. Contemporary French Music: diversity of genre and style; different types of music listeners, and safeguarding francophone music.
6. Cinema: different aspects of French cinema; the evolution of French cinema, and cinema as a national passion.


In Yr13 students will study one text, which is currently ‘Un Sac de Billes’, for which they must write a 300-word essay in the exam (this is closed text). Students also study the topics below, which provide the basis of the reading, listening, and speaking parts of the exam.
1. Diversity in society.
2. Marginalised groups in society.
3. Criminality and its treatment.
4. The right to vote for young people and political engagement.
5. Protests and strikes.
6. Politics and immigration.
 
Students will also prepare and individual research project on an aspect of French-speaking society, which they will present and discuss in their speaking exam. They will also discuss one topic based speaking card with the examiner, which can be based on any of the 12 topics studied throughout years 12 and 13.
 
All exams are final exams, taken at the end of Yr13, and are as follows:
 
Paper 1: Listening, Reading, Writing. 2hrs 30 mins, 50% of the A-Level.
Paper 2: Writing. 2hrs, 20% of the A-Level.
Paper 3: Speaking. 21-23 mins, 30% of the A-Level.
