Dear Parents and Carers
Year 12 Extended Learning Day
On Tuesday 7th February, the College will be running another whole School Extended Learning Day, incorporating a variety of tasks and activities specifically focused on the needs and requirements of certain year groups.
Year 12 students have three sessions planned; these sessions will take place in the Post-16 Common Room periods 1-3 and in the sports facilities period 4.
The first activity is a Learn 2 Live Question Time, it is a follow up to October’s Driving Awareness – Learn 2 Live presentation held at Exeter University. Learn 2 Live Question Time sessions are delivered in 90 minutes and are aimed at engaging students to consolidate the key road safety messages. They provide an opportunity to give feedback and ask questions in a more relaxed environment. Students are provided with information about the positive steps they can take when learning to drive, choosing a driving instructor and the Blood & Transplant services.
The road safety presentation is, of necessity, hard hitting and could be emotionally challenging for some students. There will be staff to provide any necessary emotional support. However, if you feel that, because of personal circumstances, your son/daughter should not attend this session please let me know in writing.
Young people between 17 - 24 years of age are over-represented in road collision fatalities and serious injuries, very often as passengers as well as drivers. Therefore we hope you will support this session and permit/encourage your son/daughter to attend.
During Learn2Live Question Time sessions students are also encouraged to make a Pledge about an aspect of their behaviour that they are going to change to keep themselves and their friends safer on the roads.
The second activity is; Relationships and Sexual Health Education (RSE) Fiona Bush from Devon Youth Services will be running a session on "Consent and Exploitation" This presentation will explore the topics of relationships, consent and sexual health. She will use various activities to best explore this topic with the students who will be encouraged to talk openly about their views and feelings, whilst highlighting the importance of respecting each other as well as themselves. Students will again be informed of where they can go for help and support within the college and externally.
Period 4 will be a sporting activity session. There will be 4 activities put on by staff and year 12 students will opt into an activity for the lesson. Suitable clothing will be required for these activities please.
Should you have any queries or concerns regarding the contents of this letter, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College.
